Therapeutic Approach

Three psychological approaches I typically use during counseling sessions are psychodynamic, relational-cultural and cognitive-behavioral theories.

I am a classically trained therapist and I specialize in contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy. All through graduate school and during my first 10 years of work in Argentina I gained extensive professional training and clinical experience with focus on Psychodynamic theory. In Contemporary Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, we work to understand your internal world. With an emphasis on the meaning of your unique and subjective experiences, we investigate the multilayered experiences that shape your way of taking in and making sense of yourself and the world around you. It is interested in mutually exploring your past and present experiences and relationships, your current contexts of living, working, and loving. It provides a lens through which we can work together untangling repetitive patterns that are unhealthy or no longer helpful in your present life, by understanding and identifying where those behaviors start from and how they have been reinforced through your lifetime.

Exploring the impact of our environments in therapy can facilitate self-understanding and connection with others. Relational-Cultural Therapy takes into account how issues in a person’s life develop within the interplay of different social factors (gender, culture, socio-economics, etc.). Considering why we (and others) act, believe and think the way we do can result in healthier relationships and boundaries while getting our needs met.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is focused on a client’s thoughts and beliefs and examines how an individual perceives and interprets meaning in his/her daily life, helping understand how our thoughts drive our feelings and actions. CBT focuses on identifying irrational thoughts and beliefs that contribute to feeling bad and helping find ways to cope with, challenge and replace them in order to feel better. There are many CBT interventions that I am able to introduce in our work together to help you deal with the problem in the here and now.

In addition to practicing the above modalities, during the course of therapy I am likely to draw on various psychological approaches according to your needs and individual goals for therapy.
